Hiking in Kamakura: Kuzuhara-Daibutsu, Ten-en Course 鎌倉ハイキング・町散策:葛原岡~大仏、天園コース

Hiking Date: 11 June 2017
Level: Easy
Length: 4 hours
View: Kamakura city, Yokohama city, Mt. Fuji (weather permitted)

Today, we (my guide friend Ikemen-S and I) started at Enoden Hase Station (江ノ電、長谷駅).
After a walk on the road, just before the tunnel, we climbed the stair to enter the Kuzuhara-Daibutsu (Daibutsu = Big Budha) hiking course.
We passed the mountain behind the famous Kamakura Big Buddha, since the trees were dense, we could not see the Big Buddha from the mountain.

Kamakura city is surrounded by mountain, though it is not that high.
The highest point is Mount Ohira (大平山), only 149.2 m above sea level.

After a while, we passed Kuzuharaoka Shrine. There is a place where you can trow a small plate to the rock. It is said that you put all your bad things in the plate, and by throwing it into peaces to the rock, your bad things will go away.

The first part of our course, Kuzuhara-Daibutsu course finished in about 1 hour, then we arrived in the city.
We walked to the famous Kenchoji Temple (建長寺), one of the most important temple in Kamakura, used to be the gate to Kamakura city in the old time.

We had to enter the temple and pay 500 yen to enter the Ten-en (天園) hiking course.
Since we had paid, we did also sightseeing the temple, and did a short Zazen (Japanese Buddhist Meditation).

To enter Ten-en hiking course, we had to climb quite a lot of stairs behind the temple.
The effort was rewarded with a good view of Kamakura City and the sea beyond.
Ten-en course is also an easy popular course.
We passsed Mount Ohira (the highest point in Kamakura as mentioned earlier), after where there was a space for having lunch picnic.

There are many courses in Ten-en hiking course, due to limited time, we ended our hiking at Ruisenji Temple (瑞泉寺).
We continued toward Tsuruoka Hachimangu (鶴岡八幡宮) then walked to Kamakura Station.

After having a Japanese desert at a cafe called Oimokafe Kanaria (おいもカフェ 金糸雀)initially I wanted to Inamuragaoka Onsen (稲村ヶ岡温泉), a short Enoden train ride, but since it was too crowded, I decided to go the other onsen near Ofuna Station (大船駅) called Yukaisokai (湯快爽快).
